THE HARDFIGHTING 44TH GEORGIA INFANTRY

This article in the March 1996 issue of CIVIL WAR magazine summarizes the war for our ancestor’s role in the fighting. He was wounded at the Battle of the Wilderness on 5 May 1864. His right leg was amputated, probably at a field hospital. He made his way home to die of gangrene in September 1864.
