GOING TO CHURCH IN SEATTLE

PLYMOUTH UCC

We attended Plymouth Congregational Church during the year we lived on the south side of Seattle, prior to buying our home in Montlake near the southeast corner of the University of Washington. After moving to Montlake we joined University Congregation Church located on the Northwest corner of the UW campus. University Church became our church home from 1961 until we left Seattle in 1971.

DALE TURNER QUOTES

University Congregational Church was the largest church Joan and I ever attended – 2,000 to 2500 members as I recall. Dale Turner seemed ever-present during weekday evening group activities, in addition to preaching on Sundays. He and Leone often hosted church members in their home. Dale seemed to know everyone by name. He frequently handed out printed cards to church members to remind them how to live their daily lives. I saved and shared a few of them for many decades.

BILL GATES – SERMON ON THE MOUNT

He demonstrated a staggering intellect as a kid

Gates plowed through the hefty World Book Encyclopedia set at age 8, but he left perhaps his biggest impression as an 11-year-old in his church confirmation class. Every year, Reverend Dale Turner challenged his pupils to memorize chapters 5-7 of the Book of Matthew – a.k.a. the Sermon on the Mount – and treated the successful ones to dinner atop the Space Needle. When Gates took his turn, Reverend Turner was stunned as the boy recited the approximately 2,000-word text with zero errors. While 31 of his classmates eventually got to chow down at the Space Needle Restaurant, Gates was the only one to deliver a flawless performance.
